Hi there,
I need to apply specific taxes to purchases made by my clients located in different provinces in Canada, ranging from 5-15%. I've inputted the specific tax per province, but the final form submission isn't applying the tax. I've had two clients so far that haven't had any taxes applied to their final purchase, and I'm having to invoice them separately in another application to charge them for the outstanding tax.
My question is: How do I ensure that my clients are being charged tax? Do I need a drop-down menu in the address submission to ensure that their billing province tethers the appropriate sales tax?
Thank you!

Hi Tidelands,
Thanks for reaching out to Jotform Support. I cloned your form to check your setup and I can see that your Set Tax Options form a Location Field is set in the Shipping Address' State/Province field. You have the option to select if the Shipping Address is the same as the Billing Address. If the form filler selects Yes, then the default will be the Billing Address meaning the State/Province from the Shipping Address won't be filled out and this will cause the Tax Surcharge to not be added to the Product List's subtotal.
You can add a dropdown in your form where you can add the State/Provinces as an option and then set it as the Set Tax Options form a Location Field.
Give it a try and let us know if you have any other questions.

TidelandsReplied on May 7, 2024 at 3:35 PMHi there, I know it's been a while since I was able to respond to this
thread. However we have been trying in vain to apply sales tax to our
Jotform and have been unsuccessful. Would you kindly take a look at our
current retailer order form and let us know how we can apply provincial tax
for our Canadian clients?
Thank you!

Hi Tidelands,
Thanks for getting back to us. When I cloned and tested your form, everything worked the way it was supposed to. I tried 3 states/province locations and the tax was updated. Take a look at the screenshot below to see my results:
Can you go ahead and try it again and let us know how it goes? If the same thing happens again, we'll investigate it more to see if we can figure out what's going on.

TidelandsReplied on March 15, 2025 at 9:35 PMHi there,
We are still having difficulty applying tax to our form submissions. We
have added the drop-down with the options for applicable provincial
Canadian tax. And then set that as the tax modifier, however, it is not
automatically applying regardless of selection. On a rare occasion, it does
it work. But mostly it does not.
Can you please review the two active forms that we are using entitled:
SAMPLE BOX ORDER FORM
Retail Order Form
And confirm that we have accurately applied the drop down tax modifiers so
that every Canadian client is charged the appropriate tax for their
provincial business location?

Hi Tidelands,
I cloned both of your forms and they seem to be working correctly. Can you inform us of any submission where the tax weren't correct? Then, we'll be able to further check the issue. After that, we'll be able to look into it. I’ll just need access to your account to do that. Don't worry, you can disable that again after we're done checking things out. Let me show you how to do it:
1. In the upper-right corner of your My Forms page, click on your Avatar/Profile Image icon.
2. In the small window that opens, click on Settings.
3. In the panel on the left, click on the Security tab.
4. Then, on the bottom-right side of the page, toggle Jotform Support Access to the On position.
After we hear back from you, we’ll have a better idea of what’s going on and how to help.

Hello!
We've added the Jotform support access to our account. I have a series of questions now that I'm hoping you can help with!
1) We want to add Stripe as an option for processing payment. But it looks like we can only have PayPal OR Stripe, not both. And if we switch from PayPal to Stripe - it will delete all of our products. Is there any way around this?2) Can you please confirm the tax application again. We recently had a Canadian Stockist use the form, and the tax for her province (PEI) was not added automatically. Even though we have now set up a drop down menu that *should* auto-apply the appropriate tax to the order.3) Can we clone this form and make two versions - one for Canadian orders, and one for US orders?Thank you!

Hi Tidelands,
I’ll need a bit of time to look into this. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
Meanwhile, let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Tidelands,
When I cloned and tested your Sample Box Order form and Retail Order form, the same thing happened for me. After investigating it a bit, I found a solution. You can add your preferred values on Set Tax Options from a Location Field field on the Payment integration on your form. You can clone my first demo form and my second demo form, or you can do it on your end. Let me show you how to do it:
1. In Form Builder, click on the Wand icon on the Payment integration.
2. Click on the Tax tab next to the Invoice tab on the upper-right part of the screen.
3. Scroll down, add your preferred values on Set Tax Options from a Location Field field.
That's it. As for your other questions or concerns, to avoid confusion, I've moved and answered them in new threads. You can check out the first question here, you can check out the second question here, and you can check out the third question here.
Give it a try and let us know if you have any other questions.
