How OOXii delivers global vision care with Jotform Enterprise

More than one billion people worldwide live with impaired vision because they don’t have access to affordable glasses. This statistic didn’t sit right with Sarah Crowe, an ophthalmologist of 25 years, and founder of global vision care nonprofit OOXii.

During a vision care service trip to the Solomon Islands, Crowe met a security guard who couldn’t see past his own hand. After undergoing a lengthy vision test, the man received a prescription. However, the nearest glasses store was in the capital city — a prohibitively expensive four-hour boat trip away. Crowe knew there had to be a better solution.

“We’ve been testing for glasses the same way for the last 100 years,” Crowe says. “It’s full of unnecessary complexity.”

With her eyes set on improving those of others, Sarah started OOXii and created a revolutionary mobile vision-testing kit to quickly determine prescriptions, identify astigmatisms, and dispense glasses in the field — the only low-cost glasses system of its kind in the world. Routinely operating in remote areas with no internet connection, OOXii needed a dynamic solution for mobile data intake. That’s when it turned to Jotform Enterprise.

“Jotform can do pretty much everything I need,” says Crowe. “I don’t need to do the coding, so I can easily change and fix things as I go. I can expand without needing to reinvent the wheel.”

Dynamic forms anywhere, anytime

Accessibility is of the utmost importance for OOXii’s mobile vision testing kits — anybody should be able to conduct the vision test, even in the absence of an OOXii employee. Crowe shared with us how she uses Jotform Enterprise and conditional logic to make OOXii’s vision testing processes easier and more accessible.

“Previously, I wrote a manual of how to do the vision testing, but it had so many pages and was way more complicated than it needed to be,” she says. “With Jotform Enterprise, I created a dynamic instructional form with conditional logic that automatically takes you where you need to go without you even having to think about it. It guides people through using the vision testing wheel, which is so important.”

Now, OOXii’s vision testing process is faster and easier than ever. Local health workers leverage OOXii’s step-by-step instructional forms to help determine prescriptions using a vision testing kit, and then dispense custom glasses.

With the Jotform Enterprise mobile app, OOXii can make its forms accessible on any mobile device, even without internet or cellular connectivity. This ensures that health workers have access to necessary forms anywhere, anytime.

“Our health workers use their phones to collect form submissions offline,” Crowe says. “Then, when they come back to the village or wherever there’s internet, we get the data automatically. Jotform Enterprise has made the lives of our in-the-field health workers much easier.”

Seamless inventory management

After conducting a vision test, health workers can use OOXii’s kit to easily assemble and dispense custom glasses. With a “best in class” designation from the 2023 Good Design Awards, OOXii’s glasses are durable, stylish, and modular, so they’re easily fitted with custom lenses in the field.

Regularly handing out different frame colors, frame sizes, and lens strengths, OOXii needed a way to track and manage inventory. Enter Jotform Enterprise once more.

“After the vision test, health workers use Jotform to fill out what they will give patients,” says Crowe. “So they say, ’OK, I’m going give them a pair of black frames, small size, and with X lenses.’ That data feeds back into our inventory system so that we can see from our end when we need to replenish their supplies.”

In addition to tracking inventory quantities, OOXii also uses Jotform Enterprise to collect data from and learn about its patients. This includes integrating photo upload widgets and e-signature consent fields into its forms.

“The data is really important for us because we’re trying to improve our methods,” says Crowe. “There’s no data about what people’s eye problems are out in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. So that in itself is helpful for our cause and for our research.”

Making the most of Enterprise

Upgrading to Jotform Enterprise has empowered Sarah Crowe and OOXii to spend less energy on tedious tasks, leaving more time to focus on making an impact. With Enterprise-level security safeguards and a dedicated customer success manager, OOXii has streamlined data collection while complying with privacy regulations.

“I can depend on Jotform to do all the compliance and security stuff, so I can just focus on what I do,” says Crowe. “After upgrading to Enterprise, I really feel the love, you know? I feel the support. When I think, oh, I need to do this. Suddenly, Jotform can do that.”
